Shop Small Gift Guide

It’s no secret that the pandemic – and 2020 in general – has taken a toll on small businesses. Fortune reported that nearly 100,000 of businesses that shut down temporarily during the lockdown resulted in permanently closed doors. With that in mind, it’s more important than ever to be conscious of where we’re spending our money, especially during the holidays when small business owners are trying to keep food under the table and presents under the tree. Below, I’ve included my favorite holiday finds for the people on your list, and I hope you’ll consider shopping small and supporting the “little guy” this year over big box stores and Amazon. (No shame in the Prime game, but I try and shop small wherever possible.)

If you don’t see anything you love on my list, Etsy has curated a “holiday shop” with editor’s picks of their top gifts this year.

One of my favorite local shops here in Texas is Thatcher. The gals behind Thatcher are amongst the nicest, most genuine people you’ll ever meet and whenever someone would come to visit, I’d make sure I’d taken them by this little haven of natural treasures. While it makes me want to ugly cry that I won’t get to peruse their offerings in person, as their physical location sadly closed due to – you know – 2020, it delights me to know that they’ll still be offering their fabulous finds online. I can’t wait to support them as they pivot! (Psst… they have already BEAUTIFULLY packaged bundles that are ready to ship or deliver to your favorite person.)

Black Businesses Matter

I know what you’re thinking: Why would we think about race when deciding where to shop? When I mention that shopping black-owned businesses is important, people usually hit me with: “I shop where I like, I don’t even think about race.” And while I understand that line of thinking, it’s problematic for a few reasons. When we consider issues that plague our society, one of them is the racial gap within business. Think about it this way: White people have had centuries of a head start on people of color in terms of businesses. Banks and major economic strongholds began when racial inequality was a glaring problem in America (and around the world) and thus, the financial gap still exists, even though there are many examples of successful Black Americans. Jim Crow-era practices hindered the Black economy, and we’re still seeing the repercussions of that today. For example, the median wealth for white families is about 12 times that for Black families  averaging around $140,000, and one in four black households have zero or negative net worth compared to less than one in ten white families without wealth. Even more concerning is that by 2053, the median wealth for Black families is projected to fall to zero.

One way to be an ally of racial equality is to build generational wealth – something white people have had hundreds of years to build – within the Black community.

Okay, now that you’ve humored me about financial equality, let’s get on to the fun part: Shopping. I turned to Instagram to ask followers for their favorite Black-owned businesses and you all didn’t disappoint. Let me share some of my faves.

  1. I love these clay earrings by Audacious Reign Designs, a creator and maker out of Birmingham, Alabama. In addition to being a fabulous artist, Raina – the brand’s founder – is a bold and fearless woman of God who puts so much spirit into each piece. I bought these black and white clay pieces, and I get compliments each and every time I wear them.
  2. Let’s talk HAIRCARE. I have unruly, damaged hair that I have spent forever trying to heal from years of bleach and over-styling. I’ve invested lots of time (and money, lawd, so much money) into finding the very best in hair care. One of my most beloved hair care brands is Briogeo, which is coincidentally owned by a woman of color. This happened by accident – I just purchased because of the rave reviews – but ever since implementing the “Don’t Despair, Repair” line into my regiment, my hair is so much softer and more manageable. I’ve also used their Scalp Revival line in the winter months to combat dryness on my scalp. Use HOLIDAY for 20% off their products.

3. I get asked all the time where I get Hazel James’ sweet little turbans and bows, and I’m OBSESSED with this small business, 6Heart Turbans + Headwraps. They’ve been so sought after that they’ve closed the shop temporarily, but will re-open for Black Friday, and it’s well worth following them on Instagram to keep up with their re-opening. Look how cute Miss Thing is in her turban!

Shopping platform ETSY has a landing page specifically to amplify Black businesses, so I highly recommend perusing their site to do your holiday shopping.

Shopping Black-owned is such an easy way to tell the Black community that they’re being heard and supported – and who doesn’t love an extra reason to shop?

As always, thanks for being here….

Seeing Stars: Looks for the 4th

Any excuse for a themed lewk, am I right? Regardless of how you plan to spend the 4th this year, here are some fun finds to add to your wardrobe.

Our little town usually does a really sweet parade down Main St, but given that 2020 has been a doozy and COVID is still in full force here in Texas, I think we’ll be sitting this one out. It’s a strange feeling to be celebrating a country that seems to be in such disarray and so divided, but I think one of the unique and special things about our country is a collective desire for progress. While I’m celebrating our freedoms, I’m also reflecting on how we can do better, be better for all Americans.

Okay – Now on to the fashion stuff!

I’M OBSESSED with these knit star pieces I found for a super steal on Amazon (click HERE to shop)this knit tank comes in lots of colors, and so does this lightweight sweater!

Walmart Haul (LOOK WHAT I FOUND!)

OK – a confession. I’m somewhat of a Target snob. But on my recent trip to Walmart I found the cutest stuff for baby… and a few fun things for me. Check out below!

I’d never even thought to look in the Walmart Baby clothing section, because I’m not usually one for the “cutesy” designs – to each their own, but I usually look for things without too much writing or “fluff.” Unfortunately, the brands that sell minimalist baby stuff usually come with a less-than-ideal price tag (especially when looking for organic cotton and other cozy knits).

But recently, I had to go to Walmart for some quarantine essentials, and because it was my first time out of the house in weeks, I took a stroll down a few more aisles and omg… I found the cutest stuff.

Gerber just released their “Modern Moments” collection, which is full of comfy basics and elegant pieces for a really bargain price.

Here’s Hazel in one of her adorable pink rompers – which are $12 for a 2-pack!

…and some other things I snagged, like these super cute spotted mules – they’re UNDER $15!

I also grabbed this bronzer everyone is talking about… it’s a super buttery formula and it smells like a coconut. (And it’s a bargain!)

And look at these cute blush pink rainboots! They’re under $17

Lesson learned: Don’t rule out Wally World for bargain fashion. You have to look a little harder, but it’s there.

Sephora Sale Faves

You ask, I deliver. Here is the full run-down of the products I’m loving from the Sephora sale. I’ve included products I personally love and a few that I’ve snagged to try at the behest of the beauty community… Here we go!

  1. Tan Luxe Super Glow: skincare.pngThis is my go-to serum for summer skin. Beauty gurus hail
one of its main ingredients, Hyaluronic Acid, as a hydrating must-have and the serum will give your face some color so you can skip those harmful rays.
  2. Bye Bye Lines Serum: My mom gifted me this for Christmas. (Should I be offended? Ha!) Once I tried it, I knew why. It made my skin feel soft and supple. Even if you’re a low maintenance gal, a good serum is non-negotiable.
  3. Confidence in a Cleanser: If you’re still “washing” your face with a make-up wipe, WE NEED TO TALK. You need to be removing your make-up AND cleansing. No parabens or sulfates and works for all skin types. I really like this line’s moisturizer too – hydrating, but not heavy. And for good skincare, the price point isn’t steep. (Try the mini sizefirst to see if you’re in love before you commit.)
  4. St Tropez Express Tan: I’m pretty fair-skinned, and I have been turned orange a time or two… so I’m a big cynic about sunless tanner. This one is, hands down, my fave. I use their gradual tanner for daily upkeep. Sephora sells the mini so you can give it a shot if you’re (understandably) wary. Pro tip: Make sure you use a mitt, or your hands will be sorry. Here’s the one I use.
  5. Extra Strength Daily Peel:Peels are amazing and they are expeeeeensive at a spa. But they are a must if you want amazing skin – the top layer of your skin is dull and dry, the good stuff is under. If you have sensitive skin, I’d test a small surface to make sure it won’t irritate.

If you’re a skincare rookie and you don’t know where to begin, keep it simple: A cleanser, followed by a serum and moisturizer is a great start. The It Cosmetics skincare line is an affordable but quality place to begin. Start here or DM me with your skin concerns and I’ll happily provide custom suggestions.

  1. Your Skin But Better Setting Spray: Yet another product with Hyaluronic Acid! Sensing a theme? The theme is quenched, dewy skin. Aloe and coconut water also pack a serious punch, but the best part is it does what it says and your glam will stay put. (Thank gawd, in this Texas heat hunny…)
  2. Becca Under Eye Corrector: Got dark circles? Join the club. As a mom of a newborn, I use this when I don’t need a full coverage make-up moment. It brightens me up so I don’t look like a corpse for Zoom meetings. When I need coverage and contour, I use Shape Tape, which has a cult following for good reason. If you’re looking for a budget option, this one is a drug-store dupe with rave reviews and lots of blogger mentions. (It’s under $8!)
  3. SUPERHERO Mascara: I snagged this at the recommendation of a blogger fave, Melissa of @Ellabrooksblog, because her lashes are (gasp) REAL and amazing. I wasn’t disappointed, it gives me lengthy lashes and isn’t clumpy. It comes in mini, too, for those who want to try. 7799cdfd-5b4e-4227-98c5-a3e817453c7f_1.14533b0be3261aa24c085f2fc1c4bc40.jpg
  4. Laura Mercier Setting Powder: A beauty blogger fave, and mine too. It’s infused with pearl to give you a healthy glow finish. (I don’t find it too shiny, either.) I like to dust my face to give my glam extra staying power.
  5. Pillow Talk Lipstick: You can spend forever trying to find the perfect shade of pinky nude – Lord knows I have tried every shade of nude at the cosmetics counter, or you can buy the cult classic by Charlotte Tillbury.

  1. Roses de Chloe: This perfume feels like Paris in Spring: chic, understated, poetic… Can a scent be poetic? Let’s go with it… Chloe makes really sophisticated scents – I’ve always loved their classic perfume – but I snagged this amazing scent on a whim (Damn you, slow check-out lines) in the mini rollerball version (linked here if you want trial size) and when I run out I will 100% be buying full size.
  2. Jo Malone Peony & Blush Suede: This elegant floral is a happy, flowery scent. It’s an ideal gift for Mother’s Day because of its beautiful bottle.
  3. Chanel: A reviewer writes: “This perfume smells like you’re rich,” which is both funny and true. Every girl should own one Chanel fragrance, and for summer this floral – meets – vetiver is sexy and charming.
  4. Red Roses Diffuser: Okay, so it’s a bit of a splurge. But it will last you a full year and give you the delicious fragrance of florals throughout your living space. IMO, worth it, but I’m a fragrance fanatic.
